AI search visibility. A practical guide for companies

A focused plan for becoming a source in the answer, not just another link in the results.

AI search systems assemble answers from retrievable passages. Your website needs clean technical access, direct answers and consistent signals that connect your name with your area of expertise.

What changed

Traditional search gives the user a list of results. AI search builds an answer and presents sources as citations. SEO still matters, but the quality of an individual passage, its freshness and its source now have a more visible role.

A high organic position can help, but it does not guarantee a citation. The inverse matters too: a strong passage can be selected even when its page is not the first result for a short keyword.

1. Content

Start with ten questions taken from sales calls, emails and customer support. Write them in the customer’s language, then choose five where you can add first-hand criteria, numbers or examples.

Answer in the first two sentences

Make the answer useful before adding context. A passage should still make sense when it is removed from the page around it. Use question-shaped headings, lists for multiple criteria, real update dates and links to original sources.

Do next
  • Collect ten real customer questions
  • Publish five direct, self-contained answers
  • Add honest update dates and supporting sources

2. Technical access

Check whether crawlers can request the page, whether key content is present in HTML, and whether structured data describes what visitors can actually see. A general allow rule in robots.txt is usually enough. Accidental noindex directives and client-only rendering are more consequential.

Connect Person, ProfessionalService, WebPage and Article nodes with stable @id references. Treat llms.txt as a low-cost content map, not a shortcut to citations.

3. Authority

Your own site is only one source connecting your name with a field. Use the same business name, concise description, author identity and contact data across the web. A relevant podcast, partner case study or industry article creates more useful context than many low-quality directory entries.

Do next
  • Audit your name and description across the web
  • Add verifiable author bios to expert content
  • Plan three credible appearances outside your domain

4. Measurement

There is no single fixed “ChatGPT ranking”. Save a baseline of ten questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, including the date, cited domains and the company named instead of yours. Repeat the same set monthly.

Segment referrals from AI tools in analytics and inspect crawler logs. Look at lead quality and conversion alongside traffic volume.

Where to start

  1. Technical access: robots, status codes, noindex and server-rendered content.
  2. Ten questions and five strong answers.
  3. A connected structured-data graph.
  4. Consistent entities and credible mentions.
  5. Measurement from day one.

An honest limitation

No one knows the model weights and no one can guarantee a citation. The practical work is to remove blockers, make answers easier to reuse and build credible signals. Those improvements also help conventional search and the people reading your site.

FAQ

Common questions.
Straight answers.

The essentials about preparing a company website for visibility in AI answers.

I usually reply the same business day.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI answers still depend on searchable, technically sound sources. Useful content and a recognizable brand support both channels.

Does llms.txt improve AI citations?

There is no reliable evidence that the file alone improves citations. It can provide a concise map of your best content, but it does not replace an indexable website.

Can anyone guarantee a citation?

No. You can remove technical blockers, publish stronger answers and build credible brand signals, but no supplier controls a model’s response.

How should a company measure its visibility in AI answers?

Use a fixed set of questions and repeat the check monthly in the same tools. Track whether the company appears, which domains are cited and which competitors appear instead, then compare that with traffic and lead quality from AI channels.
